Primo volume della nuova serie “Cristianesimo alla prova” in cui sono riprodotte le lezioni, i dialoghi e le omelie dell’Autore durante gli Esercizi spirituali della Fraternità di Comunione e Liberazione.

Come si legge nell’ampia Nota editoriale (p. 6), i testi sono stati redatti a partire da trascrizioni di registrazioni. Questo metodo si è reso necessario per il fatto che Giussani ha svolto lungo il corso della sua vita un’instancabile attività educativa, è accaduto quindi che gran parte del suo pensiero si sia comunicato attraverso la ricchezza e il ritmo di un discorso orale e sia giunto a noi mediante registrazioni audio e video conservate presso l’Archivio della Fraternità di Comunione e Liberazione a Milano.
I testi raccolti nel presente volume sono stati elaborati attenendosi ai criteri formulati a suo tempo dallo stesso Giussani: fedeltà ai discorsi nella forma in cui sono stati pronunciati; rispetto della natura dei discorsi (in relazione all’occasione in cui sono stati pronunciati); minime variazioni per favorire la resa scritta di un pensiero comunicato oralmente (cfr. p. 6).

Apre il volume la Prefazione dal titolo L’amore di Cristo ci strugge, di Julián Carrón (pp. I-XV). 

Gli scritti proposti coprono un arco di tempo di tre anni: dal 1982, anno del riconoscimento pontificio dell’Associazione, al 1984.
Ogni parte è introdotta da una breve nota storica a cura dei redattori, in corsivo nel testo.

La prima parte, “Il cuore della vita: 1982” (pp. 7-111), riporta gli Esercizi della Fraternità che ebbero luogo a Rimini dal 7 al 9 maggio 1982. Questi Esercizi rappresentano il primo incontro generale della Fraternità dopo il riconoscimento ufficiale da parte della Santa Sede, avvenuto l’11 febbraio dello stesso anno.
Tutti i testi sono inediti, a eccezione di:
- “La familiarità con Cristo” (pp. 18-42), che corrisponde alla lezione del sabato mattina ed era già stata pubblicata in precedenza, con lo stesso titolo, in Litterae Communionis Tracce (2, 2007: pp. 1-10. Con successive traduzioni); poche frasi aggiunte nell’edizione BUR, 2017.
- “Assemblea” e “Omelia” tenutesi quello stesso giorno (pp. 43-84), già pubblicate nel volume L’opera del movimento: La Fraternità di Comunione e Liberazione (“Esercizi della Fraternità: 8 maggio 1982”, San Paolo, 2002, pp. 121-155; riedizione 2011. Con successive traduzioni). In BUR, 2017 il testo dell’assemblea è stato in parte ampliato grazie al riascolto dei documenti audio. Nell’edizione San Paolo, 2002, “Omelia” e “Assemblea” sono state pubblicate come testo unico. Nel 2026, l’omelia è stata ripubblicata con il titolo “«Nella nostra unità sperimentiamo la Sua presenza. Non c’è altra via»” in Litterae Communionis-Tracce (4, 2026: pp. 70-75)
- “L’opera della Fraternità è il Movimento” (pp. 85-109), già pubblicato con il titolo “L’opera del Movimento” in Litterae Communionis-Tracce (1, 2002: pp. I-XVI) e nel volume L’opera del movimento: La Fraternità di Comunione e Liberazione (San Paolo, 2002 e 2011, pp. 97-117). In BUR (2017) sono state espunte le righe introduttive in corsivo, presenti nei volumi San Paolo, perché tratte dalla lezione tenuta agli Esercizi dei preti del 31 agosto - 3 settembre 1992 (cfr. San Paolo, 2002 e 2011, nota a p. 97).

La seconda parte, “Appartenenza e moralità: 1983” (pp. 113-210), riporta gli Esercizi svoltisi a Rimini dal 4 al 6 marzo 1983.
In quello stesso anno fu pubblicato un libretto pro manuscripto dal titolo Esercizi della Fraternità (TIEMME tip. milanese, 1983) che riporta la sintesi della lezione intitolata “Attraverso una storia” (BUR, 2017, pp. 121-153). 
Alcuni brani, tratti dalla parte iniziale della lezione “Un aiuto alla verità di sé” (BUR, 2017, pp. 188-192) e l’intera assemblea che ebbe luogo il 5 marzo (BUR, 2017, pp. 153-184), erano già stati pubblicati in L’opera del movimento: La Fraternità di Comunione e Liberazione (“Esercizi della Fraternità: 4-6 marzo 1983”, in San Paolo, 2002 e 2011, pp. 67-71, e “Esercizi della Fraternità: 5 marzo 1983”, pp. 157-182).
I testi restanti sono inediti.

La terza parte, “«Io vi chiamo amici»: 1984” (pp. 211-308), riporta gli Esercizi svoltisi a Rimini dal 30 marzo all’1 aprile 1984.
I testi sono in gran parte inediti, a eccezione delle poche pagine pubblicate nel volume L’opera del movimento: La Fraternità di Comunione e Liberazione (“Esercizi della Fraternità: 30 marzo-1 aprile 1984”, San Paolo, 2002 e 2011, pp. 71-78) che corrispondono a brani tratti da lezioni differenti rintracciabili alle pagine 242-245, 271-273, 299-303 e 304-305 di BUR, 2017.
Si segnala inoltre che sul numero di luglio /agosto 1984 della rivista CL-Litterae Communionis (7-8, 1984: pp. 16-17) fu pubblicato il testo “La novità dei rapporti è il perdono”: si tratta di appunti a cura di Laura Cioni che riassumono in breve le tre lezioni e una delle omelie tenute da Giussani. 

Il volume si chiude con le Fonti (p. 309) e gli Indici tematici (pp. 311-329). [P. M.]

The Heart of Life
There is an ambiguity of growing up that is documented in a distancing of Christ from the heart, except when we gather together in common actions, to pray or to attend School of Community. The absence of knowledge of Christ—knowledge as familiarity, as concord and assimilation—generates another distancing, which reveals itself in an ultimate embarrassment amongst us, even between husbands and wives: the distancing of Christ from the heart distances the ultimate aspect of my heart from the ultimate aspect of your heart. If we think that the consistency and the value of our life lie in the responsibility for this nearness of Christ and therefore for this nearness amongst us, then we have to understand that the companionship we mean to live is a means for not suspending our initiative in this sense. Our companionship means not to let time pass without our life asking, seeking, wanting the relationship with God present and without our life wanting or accepting that companionship, without which not even the image of His presence would be true. Therefore, in place of this demoralization that comes with growing up—and which inevitably happens—our companionship has to offer us help so that, in time and space, our life might bring hope as a dominant idea that runs through all the others, “For God nothing is impossible.” It is as if we need something absolutely different from a “human reasonability” to happen, so that you no longer count on yourself, you no longer put your trust in what you do, and the judgment of why life is worth living is not deduced by anyone from his own plans. Now, this is the strange root called heart, and the presence of Christ in our heart must produce the deep change in our subject. Our companionship will aim only at this.

Belonging and Morality
To convert is to make one’s truth real. But what does the truth of a person mean? The truth of ourselves is like that of a baby who feels he belongs to his mother, but a thousand times more—we belong to Another. Thus, conversion is the transition from perceiving you are the master of yourself to becoming aware of your belonging completely to Another. God became man in order to call us back and educate us in this conversion. If we made this awareness of belonging grow in our days, our lives would breathe, and even our evil and sins would no longer be a source of annoyance and humiliation, but of sorrow, which is a great sign of love. If you begin to understand that your consistency lies in this belonging, you are a different person, so truly new that the relationships you establish are deeper than those relationships that are born of the flesh, that come from pleasure, personal interest or nature.

“I Have Called You Friends”
To be “perfect like our Father” is to recognize, accept, and embrace Christ; for He is not a series of laws to be fulfilled but a Presence to be embraced. Everything in our lives begins to change if the awareness of the Presence of Christ among us begins to become normal—it is a presence, because otherwise we would deny and suffocate God. The two aspects of affection for Christ are, first, the certainty and assurance that Christ is the good of life and, second, familiarity and intimacy with Him. He has called us friends, and a friend is someone who shares all that one is, “I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.” The main point by which we must be impressed is that God has become familiar to us. Two operative implications arise from recognizing the presence of Christ within our lives. The first consequence is the discovery of love and tenderness toward oneself. Because when one speaks of “love for oneself,” one is also saying love for Another who is giving that love, for the gift of Another—I am grace! The second operative consequence of memory is something new in our relationships which, without this awareness, would be impossible—we do not look at the other in function of our own instrumentalization or our own opinion but for what he or she really is, a being that is a relationship with the infinite. The main aspect of the presence of Christ in the world is the creation of a companionship, of people who are together because He is there, because they recognize Him, experience His memory and begin to treat each other differently. Our Christian community tangibly and significantly represents that part of the humanity of Christ that continues within history—this is the value of our being together.
