The volume opens with the introduction by the author titled “Introduction to the 1995 Edition” (The Crossroad Publishing Company, 2001, pp. 7-27; SEI, 1995, pp. XIII-XXV). It omits the Preface by Lobkovicz that appeared in the Italian edition.
The section “The Risk of Education” (2001, pp. 29-102) is the unabridged translation of “Rischio educativo” (SEI, 1995, pp. 3-56), “Part I” of the Italian text.
This is followed by the part titled “Clarifications” (2001, pp. 103-140), which is a selection of the other writings that make up the SEI edition. The first chapter “Education, Response, Communication” comprises part of the section “Insistenza” (“A Definition of Education”, 2001, pp. 105-107 corresponds to “Educazione alla libertà”, SEI, 1995, pp. 149-151; “To Educate Is to Offer a Response to a Question One Lives”, 2001, pp. 108-110 is “Educare è proporre una risposta ad una domanda che vivi tu”, SEI, 1995, pp. 109-111) and part of the section “Viterbo 1977” (“Education as Communication of One’s Self”, 2001, p. 110-111 is “Educazione è comunicare se stessi”, SEI, 1995, p. 84). The chapter “Dialogue” (2001, pp. 112-114) presents two questions from “Dialoghi” (SEI, 1995, pp. 158-159 and p. 162). The chapter titled “The Ideal and the Life of Communion” (2001, pp. 115-124) consists of the subsections titled “L’ideale” and “Vita di comunione”, SEI, 1995, pp. 84-91) of the section “Viterbo 1977”. The chapter “The Condition for a Family Education” (2001, pp. 125-132) is part of the article “La famiglia: primo soggetto educativo” [The Family: First Subject in Education] (SEI, 1995, pp. 142-147). The last chapter, “The Educational Process and Freedom” contains part of “Educazione come cultura comunicata” (“The Fruits of Educational Process”, 2001, pp. 133-136; SEI, 1995, pp. 135-137) and part of “Educazione alla libertà” (“The nature of Freedom”, 2001, pp. 136-140; SEI, 1995, pp. 151-154), writings from the section “Insistenza”.
