Editorial History

Supplemento a Il Sabato, ottobre 10, 1992.

Summary of contents

1992

The One for Whom Life is Lived
In what context should Christians live and deepen their faith? The present age has banished God from everyday life replacing Him with reason as “the measure of all things.” For Christians, instead, the absolute, by entering history, has responded to reason’s need for the infinite by fulfilling the trajectory of knowledge; without acknowledging and accepting this experienced fact, reason is weakened and the human “I” becomes fragile and lonely, therefore at the mercy of power. In this desert, however, the expectation of liberation remains intact: we perceive—as long as our original dignity has not been destroyed—that within the appearance of things salvation may emerge. Waiting for Christ remains inevitable. Salvation happens as a grace that must be recognized and accepted by someone who decides for it. Yet there are two dangers for the personality that must decide—the first is doubtfulness; the second is meanness, convenience. In various ways, both of these positions result in eliminating and not embracing reality. Only within the phenomenon of the encounter does the courage to say “I” and to decide come about in human beings—when we are struck by the encounter with Christ, life changes, and this is not because we want to change it, but because we begin to live for Him.

The Dialogue among Us
Our friendship lives in a constant dialogue among those who go deep into the reasons that the movement offers to the “I” of each one of us. Dialogue comes, in fact, from working together on a common task and from wishing to affect ourselves and the whole world with what we have encountered. That is why everything that happens to us—every question that comes from comparing it with the reasons offered by our companionship—is necessary.

On the Way
The supreme obstacle to our journey as human beings is the “neglect” of the “I”; our first interest, then, is for the human subject to be aware of what it is; for it is only by saying “I” in all seriousness that I am able to say “my” in referring to every relationship. We need to become conscious of the determining influence that what the Gospel calls “the world” has on us: today a great confusion about the word “I” is fostered, and the inevitable consequence of this confusion is we are incapable of addressing anyone with the word “you.” Only an event can then render the “I” in all its constituent factors clear and consistent. An event always breaks in from the outside; it is something unexpected, and this represents the supreme method of knowing reality and above all of knowing our own “I”: it sets in motion the process through which the “I” begins to become aware of itself, to feel tenderness towards itself and interest in its own destiny. Christianity is an event and it is the only adequate catalyst of knowledge of the “I.” The Christian event has the form of a human encounter in the banal reality of everyday and channels the evidence of a correspondence between the divine and what we are—that is, it makes me aware of what I am, of what I desire, and it makes me understand that what it brings is just what I desire. We are here because of this encounter. Seneca said, “You must live for another if you want to live for yourself.” But as to this “other,” either you make the choice—and so you still choose yourself and your own criterion—or the other imposes itself on you and then you are a slave. In only one case is Seneca’s phrase worthy of human freedom: if the “other” links you with your destiny. So you follow this other, or else you are undone by your own hand. Baptism has marked our vocational road, but only in a certain encounter did its content appear to us in its claim of total correspondence to our hearts. The breaking in of the mystery of God made man in our personal history gives birth to a new subject—it produces a new conception and manipulation of reality, so that reality and man increasingly become one. Every day we are called to experience this subtle, discreet jolt of resurrection—a point of light, a desire to know, a passion for the destiny of men and of things, and within this, slowly, all things are embraced and involved. What is the cause of the event, the reason why this event becomes an encounter with an exceptional presence that later we will recognize as divine and to which later we will say, “You”? The cause of this event is called the Holy Spirit. Ever since that Man to whom the Spirit itself gave life died and rose again, the Holy Spirit is His Spirit. The impact of the Spirit begins with the encounter and takes precise steps. The first is the valuing of the initial encounter: it makes us understand that that impact is like a seed that needs to develop, leading us to sense all its content of promise for our lives, and that sparks a beginning of responsibility in us, according to which our whole lives will be judged. The second step is a deepening of the experience of the encounter, in which our knowledge of Christ becomes increasingly fascinating. The third aspect consists of two important implications: first, the encounter is a totalizing event, that is, it is the true form of all relationships; second, it is catholic, which means it pushes us toward all things and all people with a boundlessly open attitude and thus generates a new culture. Each one of us has been chosen so that he may make of himself a possible encounter for others.

1993-1994

The Initiative of Another
Accepting that Another will break into our lives in order to save them, to lead them to the knowledge of truth, to adhering to reality is the most difficult thing for mankind, ever since Adam and Eve. What allows this ultimate obedience to be reasonable? First, realizing we are likely to be fallible, that we cannot create anything that is ultimately fulfilled; second, verifying that if we accept this possibility as a working hypothesis, then we begin to breathe and everything becomes simple and free. The problem in our lives is all about recognizing that our work is determined, supported and protected by Another—“The one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it,” wrote Saint Paul to the Philippians—because by recognizing this we are ultimately freed from everything that can limit or disrupt our endeavors. While all things disintegrate to pieces and decay, this Other generates unity: within yourself, with friends, with strangers, with all reality and with Destiny, so that every moment is no longer a tomb, a coffin, but the beginning of a new openness to the infinite.

Recognizing a Presence
It is helpful to regain awareness of who we are through our history. During the years of student protests, we found ourselves as we were out of place; this was due to the fact the Marxist ideology attributed every hope humanity could harbor to its theories about the future. GS (Student Youth) was wiped out by this, but a small group of three or four university students rose up in 1969 with a “counterrevolutionary” flyer, entitled “Communion and Liberation.” We also longed, as we still do, for the liberation of man, but this liberation can only come from something that is already free—Christ the Redeemer, as proposed to us in GS. Then we began to gather together to formulate perspectives and suggest ideas, and over time we proposed a multitude of initiatives within the university that were aimed at bringing out a more human vision of society. In 1973 we proposed a big gathering at the Palalido stadium, entitled “In the Italian Universities for Freedom,” and we had a great success; but after that start, we were seized with an even greater fervor to demonstrate to others that, through our Christian response to everyone’s problems, we were doing better than others. This was the only way for us to have a homeland in the world. Yet our ideal is not the right to a place on earth.  Meeting the needs and requirements of other people is a good thing in itself, but we are not in the world for that reason. Believing we can save humanity by our joining together is an illusion—tit is utopia. So what are we here for? We are here to cry out to the world that the Mystery that makes all things and goes infinitely beyond all the horizons we can possibly reach, this Mystery became a man among us—only He can fulfill the desires of all men and women who follow Him. We are here because of this presence—the center of life does not lie in having a place in this world, in succeeding, but in recognizing it! God came among us so that we would recognize that we belong to Him.

The Purpose of School of Community
The purpose of School of Community is to provide adequate answers to every problem in our lives because solving a problem in life fosters curiosity and delight. This is the discovery that was made since the early years of the movement—faith is more capable of finding adequate reasons for a human problem than our own thinking is. This is why we love our faith, because it showed itself to our eyes as a greatness that is more appealing than human intelligence and more welcoming than any human heart.

Lovers of Truth
The starting point of a human person is reality as it emerges in experience first and foremost as positivity and appeal. To be reasonable is to recognize this appeal, but freedom may choose to separate evidence from the original positivity. This is why we fluctuate between a theoretical idealism and an instinctive empiricism. For centuries humanity has tried to be the measure of reality thus reducing it to nothingness; in fact, we cannot create, we can only receive. This lie has become common mentality as it has become the content of common education. Instead, our companionship and Jesus therein keep us working consistently on the solid ground of reality as it emerges from experience, thus saving reason, affection and freedom.

From 1995 Onwards

Something Unforeseen
If an individual does not trace the totality of his constitutive factors, he will shrink and no detail of reality will ever arouse affection, affectus, inside him. Reality turns into something similar to a ghost and generates only fear and calculation to defend against it. Moravia defines reality as insufficient because it cannot persuade us of its existence, but yet this is a lie, because reality exists; it is, indeed, insufficient but as we cannot grasp all the factors that constitute it, it is always lacking something, something “unforeseen,” as Montale would say. Waiting for this unforeseen event is the dominant note throughout the history of human consciousness, from the Jewish people to the present day. The possibility of walking toward the fullness of our life, toward its full affectivity and creative operation, lies only in remembering this something unforeseen that lacks, and in asking for it to show itself. The person who lives waiting for this unforeseen event, that is, experiencing this memory, is free and can judge everything. Thus, offering is, on the one hand, acknowledging that everything is made of Another and, on the other hand, desiring that this Other manifests itself. To us, School of Community is the instrument of this memory.

To Live Reason
Since reality makes itself evident in experience, to live reason means not to censor the questions that its impact awakens inside us. In fact, the method the movement suggests for clarifying the problem of man as religiosity starts from making the relationship between man and reality—in as much as it is originated—a personal experience. To put the question, “In the end, what is the world, the sky, the earth, or my small-time action made of?” means to make it clear that reality is not self-made, but that something imposes itself in it—something that we do not define and yet long for to manifest itself. To live reason, therefore, does not generate, but disposes, opens and opens wide to that possibility that this supreme unknown, this “something unforeseen” that exists in reality will manifest itself. Hence, to live reason saves faith from mere sentimentality.

We Accept Life Because We Strive for Happiness
How can we provide an alternative to the dominance of power that wants to determine all aspects of life?  The only resource that is left to us is a powerful recovery of the Christian sense of the “I,” because Christ’s conception of the human person is the only one that explains all the factors that we feel boiling up and emerging within us, as well as the reason why no power would ever be able to prevent the “I” from being “I.” Since the beginning of the movement, this stress on the value of the “I” has been not just the reason for a development of religiosity as a fundamental category of the person in all times, but also the origin of a relationship with human experience like that found in the most astute people of all ages; first and foremost Leopardi.

Unity and Fraternity—the Synthesis of Every Day
The truth and the beauty of what we say to each other and the lovingness of life that follows demand two conditions: first, that we respect the unity among us in which authority is affirmed; and, secondly, that this unity makes mutual love ever more possible.
